I realize this is a broad question.

But can anyone point to what specifically can't be done with drupal/forums vs say smf or phpbb?

Obviously these systems are dedicated to one task. I do also feel that the number of users that utilize all the features of those systems drops off really fast.

I have read in bits and pieces that drupal could never match the dedicated forum systems. But is that a resource question or a technical one? (or are those even the same)

What could 50 full time developers NOT do is perhaps another way to ask the question.

Thanks
JM

Forum differences

The main thing Drupal's forum lacks is a comprehensive admin backend. There are modules that will give you bits and pieces like forum access and comment mover, but they don't form a complete set like you have with stand alone software. From the user perspective, there's not a lot of difference if the webdev has taken the time to set it up right.
